On April 7, 2023, the Cambodian national football team lost 2-0 to Myanmar in a mixed Group A match of the SEA Games. Following this, the President of the Football Federation of Cambodia, General Sao Sokha, took to social media to announce his resignation from his post.

In his message, he stated that he wished to show a sense of responsibility and would step down as the President of the Football Federation of Cambodia effective from Sunday night, May 7, 2023.

Sao Sokha also expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, as well as the people who supported him to continue his role as the President of the Football Federation of Cambodia. He apologized for not being able to bring honor to the nation through his leadership.

Moreover, he announced that the Vice President of the Football Federation of Cambodia, Khieu Samet, would take over as the acting president of the organization from this point onwards. Sao Sokha extended his appreciation to the Vice Chairman, Member of the Executive Committee of the FFC, and all staff who have worked with him in the field of football in the past, and wished them all good health, prosperity, happiness, and luck.
